Hunting

Firearms; For most applications a calibre between .270 and .300 is best suited for hunting New Zealand game animals. The shooting distances that you can expect to encounter typically range from 100 – 300 yards. Because we are hunting in a mountain environment with varying elevations, flat shooting trajectory hunting rifles are best suited. Should you require a loan rifle or shotgun from the Lodge, this is available upon request. Sporting firearm importation to New Zealand is a very simple, hunter friendly process.

Hunting footwear; Hunters should bring good leather ankle length boots preferably broken in and waterproofed and with sufficient tread for hunting in alpine terrain. This will be one of the most important items for New Zealand hunting.

Clothing; The hunting season is spread over a number of months with differing temperature conditions. Specific advice on clothing requirements can be given once a booking is confirmed with specific dates. It is best to bring layers of clothing from thermal underwear through to a quality wind and waterproof jacket. This way the layers can be shed as the day warms up or with increased exertion. Please remember that New Zealand’s seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere i.e. summer in the USA / Europe is winter in NZ.

There is no requirement for blaze hunter orange clothing in New Zealand. With Minaret Outfitters you are hunting on an exclusive, privately owned and extensive property where no other hunters have access and you have a well trained guide with you at all times.

Optics; There is no substitute for quality optics. Although the Minaret Outfitters guides will carry quality binoculars, spotting scopes and rangefinders, bringing your own quality binoculars will very much enhance your hunting experience also.

Camera Equipment; The Minaret Outfitters guides will also carry camera equipment however it is recommend that you bring your own with ample film as there will be many great photographic opportunities both during and between hunts. Because of this, a small day pack is recommended.

The power outlets in New Zealand are 240 v, most modern electrical equipment can handle the range 100-240v and this would be labeled on the item itself.
