New Zealand is fortunate in being host to a rich and diverse wildlife population sporting both alpine and lowland game species.

The three main big game animals are the red stag (Cervus elaphus), the tahr (Hemitragus emlaicus) and the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). In addition to these large game animals, hunters can pursue fallow buck, elk, alpine goat and wild sheep.

Game birds are an exciting addition to a New Zealand hunting trip. The waterfowl available include ducks (paradise shelduck, mallard and grey), Canada geese and the large black swans, many of these birds have very liberal bag limits. Upland gamebirds obtainable include Californian quail, stalked or driven pheasant and Merriam’s turkey.
